Unravelling the Universe

Unravelling the Universe

On Tuesday 25th February we were delighted to welcome three PhD students from Cardiff University to present our latest Howell’s Lecture to students from Years 11-13. The presenters gave an overview of their educational journey from GCSE to PhD and explained that a career path may not be a straight progression, but can be messy, just like the universe. The presentations on the theme of Unravelling the Universe: Our Journey were a mix of cosmology and galaxy evolution, exoplanets, an overview of condensed matter physics. They drew together aspects of astrophysics and quantum physics, and explained the importance of a good grounding in mathematics. Our students found out about what life as a theorist, researcher and astronomer is like and how research pushes out the boundaries of existing knowledge.

Our next lecture is scheduled for Tuesday 3rd March at 3.45pm in the Dining Room. Mme Jourdren will be drawing on her own experiences to talk about Celtic Connections: Exploring Welsh and Breton.
