Engineering excellence: Howells teams triumph at EESW Presentation Day

Year 12 students participated in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) Presentation Day on Friday 22nd March, at Swansea Arena. Two teams from Howells, each comprising five students, competed with fifty-two other teams from across South Wales. Our students received high commendations and performed well under detailed questioning from a panel of engineers who served as judges.

These students have dedicated five months to developing an automated coin packaging system in collaboration with engineers from the Royal Mint in Llantrisant. Both teams submitted an academic report on their findings in February and created a functional prototype to demonstrate their chosen concept. Team 2 was among the four teams nominated in the fiercely competitive category of "Most Innovative Solution to the Problem Set" and impressed the judging panel with their code-driven working model.

The teams collaborated effectively, demonstrating resilience and creative thinking, and will be honoured with a Crest Award for their achievements. This project has provided them with valuable insights into the professional environment of engineering projects.

We extend our gratitude to Mr Williams and the PD department for their workshop assistance, as well as to our contact at the Royal Mint, Amy Williams, for her invaluable help and support.
