On Thursday 24th September, College students attended the first in an online lecture series regarding current affairs. Ronan Patrick gave us an Introduction to Financial Markets, answering questions such as: what is the difference between a commercial bank and an investment bank, a bond and an equity, a hedge fund and a mutual fund. Financial markets can seem an intimidating topic due to complex and convoluted definitions. However, this lecture expressed concepts simply and concisely and provided a great introduction to those wishing to understand how money is concentrated in nations and societal groups. I look forward to The Politics of Artificial Intelligence, the next lecture, which looks in detail at bias and discrimination associated with AI—think facial recognition and the recent exam algorithm.
