College lecture: Dr Felix Priestley from the Astronomy Department of Cardiff University

On Thursday 9th March, as part of our College Lecture Programme, Dr Felix Priestley from the Astronomy Department of Cardiff University came to talk to College students about Star Formations in the Milky Way. He began by asking his audience, 'What is a star anyway?' With that challenging question in mind, he then took his audience through a series of further explorations including considering how stars formed and where this formation took place. He explained the importance of using computer simulations in this field of study but also pointed out the fundamental flaw in that we can only really appreciate these star formations in two dimensions so we cannot fully understand the process. We can pose the questions but, as yet, we cannot be certain about the answers.
