Howell’s College students were in for a treat on Wednesday, November 22nd, when Dr Baker delivered a lecture on Shakespeare and the multitude of critics who delve into his plays. Commencing with a quote from the first scene of 'Antony and Cleopatra,' Dr Baker asserted that the overarching theme in Shakespeare's plays revolves around power. Uniquely valuable and memorable, these plays have been subverted by successive generations to reflect the societal conditions of each era. Dr Baker left his audience with the thought-provoking idea that Shakespeare's plays can be likened to 'brilliantly lit up question marks' without easy answers. These challenging theories made for a captivating November evening.
