Why Howell’s Co-Ed College?

Howell’s Co-Ed College is the top school in Wales, and specialises in education at A level for students aged 16+. Leading the way in pre-university education, our commitment to offering individual attention through small class sizes and the personal tutor system enables each student to reach their academic potential and feel happy and secure. We expect our students to achieve the top results, and they are disciplined enough to know they can work hard but have fun.

What is Cardiff like?

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales, and its largest city. It has a distinctive character with an excellent quality of life and an international reputation. Howell’s Co-Ed College is a Victorian building that opened as a school in 1860, and sits on the edge of Llandaff Fields, a vast, tree-filled parkland that students can use for exercise and recreation. A short walk through the park takes you along the River Taff and then to Cardiff Castle, which was built by Norman invaders in the 11th century. Students living in Cardiff benefit from the combination of a small, friendly city with the cultural, historical and recreational amenities of an ambitious and progressive capital city. Many national cultural and sporting institutions are based in Cardiff, including the Wales Millennium Centre and the Principality Stadium, which hosts several international rugby matches each year. Cardiff is a fantastically well-connected city, just 2 hours from London by train, an hour from the Roman city of Bath and 2 hours from Oxford.

Results

Our consistently outstanding A Level results reflect the commitment, dedication and hard work of both our students and our academic staff. Students at Howell’s Co-Ed College sitting A-levels in 2019 were awarded more A*s than ever this year.  52% of all results were A* - A grades, and 80% of all grades were A* - B. In total, 25% of the year group achieved all As and A*s.  This is a fantastic achievement for the students, particularly considering the new, more challenging, A-level specifications.

Curriculum

With its outstanding A-Level teaching, Howell’s Co-Ed College is the ideal place for students to embark on their Sixth Form career and prepare for the demands of university education.

Subject choice is influenced by university requirements, while keeping students’ degree options open. Students typically study three or four subjects. Further information on each of the subjects offered can be found on our website:  https://www.howellscoedcollege.gdst.net/curriculum

What Extra-Curricular activities are available?

The college complements its academic excellence with an exciting timetable of co-curricular activities, including an extensive programme of creative arts and music, critical thinking seminars, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award and a range of clubs from engineering to mindfulness and Fairtrade to politics. A full schedule of sports —from football to rowing, dodgeball to zumba—is available to all students, who can take full advantage of the newly opened sports complex, with tennis courts, an astro-pitch and modern pavilion. We have also have a strong business connection with the Vale Resort, which has two championship golf courses.
