The Politics of AI Online Lecture

On Thursday 1st October, College students attended the next in the online lecture series regarding current affairs. This week's lecture, by public policy researcher Eleanor Shearer, was about the politics of AI. We looked at the possible racial and social biases of machine learning and the ethics surrounding the extraction of vast amounts of private data to feed such systems. Eleanor explored the growing problems surrounding fake news and deep fakes which will provide greater scope for leaders such as Donald Trump to deny allegations of misconduct. We looked at how privacy has become monetised, the complexities of accountability chains with the introduction of new technologies such as driverless cars and a new age of surveillance capitalism.
