Niamh S completes the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award

Huge congratulations to Niamh S for completing her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award! She has been committed and dedicated to completing the award which is no mean feat whilst juggling her studies and hobbies. Niamh has completed her award within an impressive 19 months. We spoke to Niamh about her experiences with the Duke of Edinburgh Award and what she has gained from taking part in it. You can read her answers below.

How do you think DofE could help in your future?

I believe by completing DofE, it helps prepare you for your future. I developed my commitment, teamwork and problem solving skills. All skills that I think will be valuable to me in my future studies and career. You learn how to work efficiently in stressful situations with your team which can often be tricky and you need good communication and teamwork skills. Completing the physical, skill and volunteering sections is rewarding and I believe it proves to future universities and employees your impressive commitment and reliability skills.

What was the toughest part of your DofE?

The toughest part of DofE was the expedition. It was physically and mentally challenging and required resilience and determination. We were put into a demanding environment and were tested as a group and as individuals. We had early starts, tough routes to walk in the heat and we had to navigate our way around the Beacons.

What was the most memorable moment of completing your DofE?

I would say the most memorable moment of DofE was the residential. I attended an InvestIN course in London for 5 days and 4 nights. Although it was the most daunting part of DofE for me, I had a great time. I made new friends and it gave me an insight into university life. It’s the most memorable part as it was an experience I never would have had the confidence to do if it wasn’t for DofE, and it is one experience I am so glad I undertook.

How many blisters did you have after completing your expedition?

None thankfully!

If you could only use 3 words to describe the DofE- what would you use?

Challenging, memorable and rewarding.

Did you learn any handy tips whilst completing your expedition?

  1. Practice walking in walking boots to prevent blisters
  2. Take insect repellent as in the summer there are lots of bugs!
  3. Don’t worry if sometimes you get a bit emotional

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I’m want to study neuroscience at university next year so I plan to work in that field somehow.
