National Poetry Day

Thursday 4th October was National Poetry Day and  Years 8 and 9 enjoyed a Q&A session and performance by Foyle’s Young Poet 2015 and Howell’s College student, Sala.  Poetry Club shared some of their beautiful poems on the theme of Change, and confidently performed them in our Poetry Day assembly. Poetry Club mascot, William Blake the dragon, also made a guest appearance.
In preparation for National Poetry Day, all students had been invited to enter a poem on the theme of ‘Change.’ The standard of all entries this year has been entirely overwhelming and students wrote with flair and originality on an enormous range of themes.

  • Winner: Maryam M L
  • Runners Up: Leigha S and Mia H
  • Poetry Club Prize: Connie C
  • Library Choice: Stephanie W
  • College: Ellie M and Morwenna B

Next week, we will also be recognising some of the poets whose incredible poems resonated with ‘writing for wellbeing’ as part of Headsup@Howells, for example encouraging us to share a smile to change somebody’s day.
Poetry also crept into lessons with students in 9Q working on the challenging task of writing a Shakespearean sonnet from Miranda to Ferdinand, as part of their work on The Tempest.  We look forward to sharing these in class next week.  The first quatrain was certainly promising:
I have been struck in the heart by Cupid
No ambition to see a goodl’er man,
I’m so crazy in love it is stupid
I will not obey my dear father’s ban.
