Over half term, History students from Year 12 and 13 visited Berlin to build on their knowledge of life there under the Nazis and during the Cold War. One of the most interesting visits was to the House of the Wannsee Conference, where we learned how Nazi policy towards the Jews in Germany gradually changed from one of isolation to one of systematic extermination; the day ended with a visit to an extremely wet and blustery Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, which only added to our thoughts of the horrific experiences prisoners must have endured there. On our walking tour of Berlin, we took in some of the main memorials to victims of the Holocaust and we visited the Reichstag at night to take in the fantastic views of Berlin's skyline. Our last day ended with a visit to the DDR Museum to learn more about the benefits and disadvantages of living in East Germany. The History Department would like to thank the students for helping to make the trip so enjoyable for us as well as them!
